Menstrual Product Drive - April to May 2021The Global Health Committee and the Federation of Medical Women in Canada are collecting menstrual products, toiletries, and canned food for our local Hamilton women shelters. The drive will take place throughout April until May 21st and donations will be accepted alongside Project Connect at CSBL.

Trauma Informed Sexual and Reproductive Care - March 19, 2021The Global Health and Trauma-Informed Care IGs hosted a workshop on providing Trauma-Informed care when delivering sexual and reproductive care such as sexual histories and pelvic exams. With 1 in 3 women experiencing physical or sexual violence, we wanted to provide practical advice on practicing trauma-informed care for patients.

IUD Insertion workshop Part 1 - March 4, 2021To kick it off the reproductive subunit, the Global Health IG and the OBGYN IG are hosting an IUD Insertion workshop. 20 participants were given a mini pelvic model and IUD kits provided by Bayer. Dr. Costescu, an OB/GYN who specializes in family planning and contraception, provided instructions on IUD insertion and additional information on contraceptive options.

Ethical Global Health Development - February 26, 2021Creating equitable partnerships in global health efforts is essential to ensuring mutual growth, but how does one create such a partnership and how can we support the development of international health systems in an ethical way? We approached these questions with Dr. Chamberlain-Froese, the founder of Save the Mothers. Dr. Chamberlain is an OBGYN who has worked extensively in global health development. Her organization equips professionals in developing countries with the education and training needed to improve the health of mothers and babies.

COVID-19 LUNCH & LEARN - January 27, 2021Since rolling out in late 2020, the Covid-19 vaccines have been met with both optimism and hesitance. The event seeks to learn about the vaccines from scientific and public health perspectives. Our speakers were McMaster physicians: Dr. Rana Bana, a public health and preventative medicine physician, and Dr. Adam Komorowski, a medical microbiologist who has written extensively about the vaccines. Topics that were included: immunity duration, side effects, Canada's and Ontario's vaccination plans, and many more.

Physician Epidemiologist - December 4, 2020Are you interested in pursuing a career in public health? Do you want to know what it is like working as a public health epidemiologist in Canada? Dr. Nitin Mohan spoke about his former experience working for the Government of Canada at the Public Health Agency, where he was a physician epidemiologist with the Centre for Food-Borne, Enteric, and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (CFEZID. He also worked in the Surveillance Coordination Unit under the Infectious Disease Prevention Control Branch (IDPCB).
Dr. Nitin Mohan is currently an assistant professor at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry - Western University. He is also a partner and physician epidemiologist at a private public health consultancy firm and think tank called ETIO which is based in Toronto, Ontario. He obtained his Medical Doctorate in 2015 and his Master of Public Health in 2017 |

Our speaker was Dr. Suvanand Sahu, the Deputy Executive Director of the Stop TB Partnership working with the UN (and previously the WHO), who discussed his career path, a day in his career, and how his career differs from others.
