Global Mental Health: Local Perspectives
Join us as we take a look into the state of mental healthcare across continents. We will hear from two mental health practitioners—one from Canada, one from South Africa—who will be sharing their insight into various aspects of mental health in their setting. During the talk, the panellists will delve into how they go about achieving mental healthcare objectives in their respective sets of circumstances. This event is a collaboration between the Global Health Committee at McMaster University, Canada and the Standing Committee on Public Health at Stellenbosch University, South Africa. The Global Health Clinical Skills Carousel is an annual mock OSCE-style event that aims to provide first year medical students with exposure to patients from marginalized communities and groups traditionally under represented in the med school curriculum. This event is hosted by the Global Health Committee and the Social Justice Interest Group.
This event will take place on Saturday June 11th in CSBL-1M on McMaster Hamilton Campus between 10am and 3pm. Each station represents a patient scenario specific to the lived experiences of diverse populations. Each student with get to participate in 5 history taking OSCE stations: Black Maternal health, Indigenous Health, Refugee Health, Trans Health, and Street health. This is a low stakes event and an excellent learning opportunity to gain critical communication skills needed when working with individuals from diverse populations. This will take approximately 1 hour and 15 mins with 11 minutes for each station (8 minutes + 3 minutes of feedback). Each of the 5 stations will consist of an SP and an assessor with lived experience corresponding to that station. |
Careers in Global Health
What does a career in “Global Health” actually look like? The Global Health Committee hosted an evening with three Global Health physicians — Drs. Irene Turpie, Lawrence Loh, and Adrienne Chan — hearing about their work in Doctors Without Borders, Public Health, and Global Health research. Speaker details: Dr. Irene Turpie is a Geriatric Medicine physician, Professor Emerita in Medicine and Geriatrics at McMaster University, and a long-time tutor in the UGME at McMaster. She has spent a sabbatical period in Somalia working with Médecins Sans Frontiers in 2005 and a month in Kampala, Uganda in 2012 and in 2019. Dr. Lawrence Loh is a Public Health and Preventative Medicine physician and the Medical Officer of Health for the Region of Peel. Prior to his time at Peel, Loh worked at all three levels of government in two provinces at five agencies, including the Public Health Agency of Canada, Fraser Health Authority in British Columbia, and Public Health Ontario. Dr. Adrienne K. Chan is an Infectious Diseases physician and Associate Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Control at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Dr. Chan’s current areas of research interest include models infectious disease care and treatment delivery in low resource settings. Over the last 15 years, Dr. Chan has worked in southern Africa with clinical experience in Malawi, Lesotho, Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe, and multiple research collaborations with regional and international networks. |
