Written by: McMaster Medical School c2023 Student, Hamilton Campus Where was your placement and what specialty was it in?
I did a cc2 clerkship elective in ENT at Brampton How did you get to your placement? I drove to this elective. A lot of this elective is actually done at a clinic outside of the hospital which had free parking. You could also buy monthly parking at the hospital for about $50. I was eligible for MacCare which I used for commuting from Toronto Describe a typical day at your elective. Most days were clinic due to lack of OR from COVID. I would arrive around 8:30 and start clinic with one of the three doctors who work there. We would basically work straight to about 3:30 to 5:00pm depending on the day and doctor. Once a week we had ORs which started at 8 and ended around 3pm. Clinic also had procedures that they'd grab me to help out with. I switched around with the three doctors throughout the day as they would grab me if there was anything interesting . What level of responsibility/exposure did you have as a medical student? Clinic depended on the doctor. One would send me to see patients to begin with and come in after. Some of the others preferred me to shadow them. They were incredible teachers and would give me lots of opportunities to perform ear exams or nasal endoscopy so that I could learn. In the OR, they will let you close the thyroidectomy/parotidectomy/neck dissections. What are some common conditions you saw? Ear - ear pain, hearing loss, sudden SNHL, wax Throat - globus, sore throat, thyroid nodules Nose - sinusitis, rhinitis, epistaxis What was one thing you didn’t like about the elective? I wished I had more responsibility in clinic. I also didn't enjoy the commute Anything else you would like to add about the experience? These were honestly some of the best doctors I've had the chance to work with! They were all incredible teachers who pimped a little, but then really took the opportunity to teach and make sure you learn. Going in, I was very nervous as ENT isn't an area we are exposed to much but I learned a lot in those two weeks.
