Written by: Stephanie Scott c2023 McMaster Medical School, Hamilton Campus Where was your placement and what specialty was it in?
Pediatrics clerkship elective [cc2] at Brampton Civic Hospital. How did you get to your placement? I commuted from Mississauga and received $225 from MacCare for gas. It was a 30 minute drive each way but I imagine it would be at least 45 from hamilton. Describe a typical day at your elective/core. Every day was different! Some call where we would attend deliveries and do consults. Some NICU where we would do working rounds. Some ward where we would round on patients in the morning and then join the on call doctor in the afternoon! It was very busy and there was tremendous exposure! What level of responsibility did you have as a medical student? Did consults, saw my own patients on rounds, and assessed babies in NICU. This allowed for lots of exposure! What are some common conditions you saw? We saw lots of variety. I’d say FTT, newborn exam, and jaundice were big topics. These would be useful to review. Also common issues in NICU babies like hypoglycaemia, sepsis etc. The developmental milestones are good to review. Also bread and butter peds like asthma was important. But there were also super interesting cases like HSP, rare genetic disorders, MIS-C. What is your most memorable experience? I loved attending the deliveries, examining the babies and seeing the neonatal resuscitations! What was one thing you didn’t like about the elective? The overnight call was brutal because it’s such a busy hospital so you get called every hour and get no sleep. Do you have any recommendations for things to do/explore/eat in the local area? Stayed in Mississauga so not really! What’s one thing you wish you knew before starting this elective? Reviewing the newborn history and exam is key. Would you recommend this elective to current students? Absolutely! My favourite clinical experience for sure! If you are interested in peds, this is amazing exposure. Anything else you would like to add about the experience? I don’t think this is often an available elective but if you get the chance and have any interest in peds, this is a must! It was an amazing introduction to peds and the volume is great for learning. I probably saw more patients then most people see on their 4 week core.
