Written by: McMaster Medical School c2023 Student, Hamilton Campus 1. Where and how long was your placement?
I did my 2-week anesthesia core at Etobicoke General Hospital 2. How did you get to the elective/core? Did you need a car at this location? How did you park? I commuted to this location - you need a car to get here. You can get a monthly parking pass on your first day/during the orientation at the parking desk by the visitor entrance of the hospital, it was around $45. 3. What were your accommodations like? Did you get any funding from the school (MacCare etc?) I got funding from MacCare to commute. 4. Describe a typical day at your elective/core. Our start time was officially 7:30am, but I often got there a bit earlier to change into my scrubs and go see the first patient before the staff arrived. If I worked with that staff before I might draw certain medications up based on their preference, but this wasn't always the case. There were also some opportunities to help setup IVs for patients during this time (talk to the anesthesia assistants, they're very nice!) After the staff arrived I would work with them throughout the day to prepare the room for the patient. Halfway through each case the attending would usually send me to see the next patient. When the operation finished I'd help bring the patient to the PACU. We'd continue this for all our cases throughout the day. Usually my day would end around 3-4pm. If you're interested in the next day's cases you can ask the OR desk for the list and read up on the cases beforehand but this isn't necessary. I had one call shift scheduled until 11pm as well. 5. What level of responsibility/exposure did you have as a medical student? I had the opportunity to help with intubations, LMAs and IVs. The preceptors were very receptive to having me help out with procedures. 6. What was one thing you didn’t like about the core? At Etobicoke General, the anesthesiologist on call is responsible for the C-sections and epidurals. Since I was always scheduled in the OR I didn't get exposure to the obstetrical side of anesthesia. 7. Do you have any recommendations for things to do/explore/eat in the local area? There's a great vegetarian Indian restaurant nearby called Rajdhani! 8. What’s one thing you wish you knew before doing this elective? This site has amazing anesthesia assistants who were very receptive to helping learners. They helped myself and the nursing students out a ton so I would recommend getting to know them! 9. Would you recommend this core to current students? Definitely! The preceptors are very kind, there's a ton of opportunity to do procedures and learn about the bread and butter of anesthesia.
