Written by: McMaster Medical School c2023 Student, Hamilton Campus What elective did you do?
I did a 1-week post MF4 elective in Niagara General for general surgery. How did you get to the elective? I drove, yes you'll need a car, unless you are going to live there … it was like 100 bucks a month for parking. I parked in the regular parking lot in the first day. I don't know of any accommodations and didn't receive maccare funding. Describe a typical day at your elective. 1. Clinic day: you just shadow the doc on follow ups and refferals 2. Scope day: watch scopes 3. Surg day: watch 7 open iguinal hernia repairs What level of responsibility/exposure did you have as a medical student? Nil What are some things to review about before this elective? Inguinal hernia back to front and scoping guidelines What is your most memorable experience? The anesthesiologists -- had a great time talking to them and hearing about their careers. What was one thing you didn’t like? It was basically all shadowing, nothing like general surgery core at all. It may be preceptor dependent. Do you have any recommendations for things to do/explore/eat in the local area? Nope, didn't explore the area. What’s one thing you wish you knew before doing this elective? Don’t do it, horrible exposure. No rounding/medical management/consults. No autonomy at all. Literally just stand next to a wall and watch. Would you recommend this elective to current students? Not at all. Again, it may be preceptor dependent, but I didn't get much exposure and not a lot of learning. Anything else you would like to add about the experience? Could be better now but that was my experience during post MF4
