Written by: c2023 Student, McMaster Medical School Hamilton Campus Where was your placement and what specialty was it in?
Pediatrics Clerkship Core [in Orangeville] How did you get to your placement? ROMP provided 800 bones to pay for a room in a host's house. The host is very nice, cooks dinner, and has a famous son. 10 min drive from host house to hospital. Free parking with your hospital badge. You need a car for this rotation or else you will suffer. Describe a typical day at your core. There was nothing much going on due to covid. Home call 9am to 10pm every day. Had 3/4 weekends off where I returned to hammy. 2 pediatricians, both very nice and keen to teach. Round on inpatients 8:30 to noon. You care for newborns in OB as well as peds ward. On call the rest of the day. Doc will text you for ER consults. Not very busy at all. Pre-covid they had peds outpatient clinic 2-3/5 days of the week in the AM. What level of responsibility/exposure did you have as a medical student? First week shadowing doc. After week 1: independent consults, review findings with doc, then doc will speak with pt and family. What are some common conditions you saw? And do you have any resource suggestions? Croup/bronchiolitis/URI/covid, newborn physical exam. Study aquifer. What is your most memorable experience? Good caf food What was one thing you didn’t like? Lots of sitting around. I used this time to study. Do you have any recommendations for things to do/explore/eat in the local area? Surprisingly good Indian food - Orangeville is close to Brampton. I gained 5lbs. Would you recommend this placement to current students? Come here if you're not super keen on peds.
