Written by: McMaster Medical School c2023 Student, Hamilton Campus What was the elective? I did my 1-week post MF4 elective in critical care at Niagara Health - St. Catherines site. How did you get to the elective? I drove there. You'll need a car unless you live nearby. Parking was $100 a month and $70 for 10 days, I think. General parking is $8/day. I didn't receive any MacCare for the commute as its a Niagara site. Describe a typical day at your elective/core. 1. Get in at 7 AM 2. Hand over 3. Round on each patient 4. Free time/consults if they come 5. Solve ward issues that arrive 6. Run the list one time 7. Handover go home at around 5 PM What level of responsibility/exposure did you have as a medical student? I wrote ICU notes, but I didn't have many responsibilities otherwise. What are some things to review about before this elective? Ventilation settings Antibiotics Sepis treatment Covid19 treatment Pancreatitis treatment Goals of care discussion What is your most memorable experience? Massive transfusion protocol, central line placement, lots of goals of care discussion with patients with poor prognosis. What was one thing you didn’t like? You have to be okay with making your own learning opportunities. After rounds preceptors are doing their own thing. What’s one thing you wish you knew before doing this elective? How to write an ICU note, system based Vent settings (always discussed), ABX because everyones got an infection Would you recommend this elective/core to current students? No. Its pretty deep, and theres no residents. Very difficult for a learner just starting out to comprehend what is going on. May be good for career exploration but a lot of it may go over your head.
