Written by: Sean Lazaro c2023 McMaster Medical School, Hamilton Campus What was your elective?
A clerkship elective in interventional radiology at Niagara Health - St. Catherines Site. How did you get to the elective? I drove from my AirBnB. I got $480 from MacCare. Describe a typical day at your elective. A typical day consisted of observing the preceptor performing their procedures such as U/S liver biopsy, CT-guided kidney tumor ablation or uterine artery embolization under fluoroscopic guidance. Opportunities for hands-on experience included getting time with an ultrasound machine to practice locating veins and being allowed to insert a PICC line in patients with U/S and X-ray guidance. What are some things to review about before this elective? And do you have any resource suggestions? No review or preparation is required for this elective because the procedures are quite specialized and you will mostly be observing. For those who are interested, quickly reading about the common procedures performed in IR at http://rfs.sirweb.org/medical-student-section/introduction-to-ir/ will be a good way to prepare. This resource also contains more info for those looking for a deeper dive. What is your most memorable experience from this elective? I really liked being able to practice using an ultrasound machine because it was hands-on and this skill will be transferrable to other scenarios such as U/S guided injections in rheumatology. What was one thing you didn’t like about the elective? I didn't like the fact that I was just observing most of the time without being able to apply skills such as history-taking or physical examination.
